That drinks break has worked wonders for Arsenal. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang makes no mistake from 12 yards in what could be his last game for Arsenal.

What a farewell gift it would be if he could bring them a 14th FA Cup. Nicolas Pepe is denied by the offside flag It was a pretty goal in the top gorner from distance.

Arsenal have finally discovered where the Chelsea goal is and make a couple of interesting forays into the Blues' half. No end product as yet though.

I said no matter the result earlier, but interestingly Chelsea have never lost an FA Cup final in which they have taken the lead.

I think that makes them strong favourites to take their ninth title today! These are dangerous times for Arsenal as their defence is all over the place.

Martinez makes another save from Pulisic and Chelsea already have five dangerous attacks in the stats book.

That was a cool finish from Pulisic. He has now made history no matter the result as he is the first American to net in an FA Cup final.

And he started the move to, playing in Mount, who got it to Olivier Giroud, and the Frenchman just nudges it over to the advancing Pulisic to sidefoot past Martinez.

And as I finish typing that, you can chuck it out the window. An American has opened the scoring in an FA Cup final!! Both teams get their sizing-up done early on with tentative passing and testing of the defenders with hopeful balls in.

While Arsenal and Chelsea would like to stamp an early authority on the game, they will be to aware of how a simple lapse can have you chasing the game early on.

Despite the lack of fans, the piped-in crowd noise is doing its best to create an atmosphere at the cavernous Wembley.

And there will be no shortage of nerves jangling from fans of both sides as they will remember too clearly some haphazard performances earlier this campaign.

A pre-recorded stunt so we know there were no gust-of-wind-related accidents. With the Gunners going for win number 14 in the event, I guess he is right Over here in Dubai, the fans are definitely coming out of the woodwork after some pretty mediocre football earlier in the season from both sides had them in hiding.

But thanks to the UAE authorities and the general public's adherence to the safety protocols, it is game on.

So, 15 minutes to go to kick-off. Who do you fancy? I hope you have found your favourite spot to watch the big game. The bars and cafes around London will be even more packed than usual as 90, or fans will be looking for room to watch the game rather than in their usual spot at Wembley, which is empty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be a bit of history made today as the two fledgling managers pursue their first major silverware. Lampard will be hoping to continue his recent good run that took Chelsea into the top four and the Champions League spots in the Premier League, while Arteta will take comfort and courage from the comprehensive win over mentor Pep Guardiola and Manchester City in the semi-finals.

Mitre took over for the —19 season, beginning a three-year partnership with the FA. The possibility of unlikely victories in the earlier rounds of the competition, where lower ranked teams beat higher placed opposition in what is known as a "giant killing" or "cupset", is much anticipated by the public.

Such upsets are considered an integral part of the tradition and prestige of the competition, and the attention gained by giant-killing teams can be as great as that for winners of the cup.

One analysis of four years of FA Cup results showed that it was The probability drops to At that time, the Football League consisted of two divisions with a combined total of 36 clubs, mostly teams from Northern England and the Midlands.

Spurs competed in the Southern Football League , which ran parallel to the Football League, and were champions. Only two other non-League clubs have even reached the final since the founding of the League: Sheffield Wednesday in champions of the Football Alliance , a rival league which was already effectively the tier below the League, which it formally became in upon formation of the Second Division — Wednesday being let straight into the First Division and the Southern League's Southampton in and Upon the Football League's expansion and creation of the Third Division for —21 , all the clubs in the Southern League First Division clubs transferred over and it has been since placed below the League in the English football league system , with the National League sandwiching the two since — Prior to that game, the last time a non-league side defeated a Level 1 club was in when Sutton United claimed a 2—1 victory at home over Coventry City , who had won the FA Cup less than two years prior.

Hereford finished the shocking comeback by defeating Newcastle 2—1 in the match. Some small clubs gain a reputation for being "cup specialists" after two or more giant killing feats within a few years.

For non-League teams, reaching the Third Round Proper — where all Level 1 sides now enter — is considered a major achievement. In the —09 FA Cup , a record eight non-League teams achieved this feat.

Chasetown , while playing at Level 8 of English football during the —08 competition , are the lowest-ranked team to ever play in the Third Round Proper final 64, of teams entered that season.

In games between League sides, one of the most notable results was the victory by Wrexham , bottom of the previous season's League avoiding relegation due to expansion of The Football League , over reigning champions Arsenal.

Another similar shock was when Shrewsbury Town beat Everton 2—1 in Everton finished 7th in the Premier League and Shrewsbury Town were relegated to the Football Conference that same season.

Since its establishment, the FA Cup has been won by 43 different teams. Teams shown in italics are no longer in existence.

Four clubs have won consecutive FA Cups on more than one occasion: Wanderers , and , , , Blackburn Rovers , , and , , Tottenham Hotspur , and , and Arsenal , and , In , Arsenal became the first side to win both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2—1 in both finals.

Liverpool in , Chelsea in and Manchester City in have since repeated this feat. In —99 , Manchester United added the Champions League title to their league and cup double to complete a unique Treble.

The FA Cup has only been won by a non-English team once. Cardiff City achieved this in when they beat Arsenal in the final at Wembley. They had previously made it to the final only to lose to Sheffield United in and lost another final to Portsmouth in Cardiff City is also the only team to win the national cups of two different countries in the same season, having also won the Welsh Cup in The Scottish team Queen's Park reached and lost the final in both and Since the creation of the Football League in , the final has never been contested by two teams from outside the top division, and there have only been eight winners who were not in the top flight: Notts County ; Tottenham Hotspur ; Wolverhampton Wanderers ; Barnsley ; West Bromwich Albion ; Sunderland , Southampton and West Ham United With the exception of Tottenham, these clubs were all playing in the second tier the old Second Division — Tottenham were playing in the Southern League and were only elected to the Football League in , meaning they are the only non-League winners of the FA Cup since the League's creation.

Other than Tottenham's victory, only 24 finalists have come from outside English football's top tier, with a record of 7 wins and 17 runners-up: and none at all from the third tier or lower, Southampton , then in the Southern League being the last finalist from outside the top two tiers.

Sunderland's win in was considered a major upset, having beaten Leeds United who finished third in the top flight that season. This also marked the last time as of a team from outside the top division won the FA Cup.

Uniquely, in three of the four semi-finalists Barnsley, Cardiff City and West Bromwich were from outside the top division, although the eventual winner was the last remaining top-flight team, Portsmouth.

Retrieved 12 August For centuries before the first meeting of the Football Association in The Freemasons' Tavern on Great Queen Street , London on 26 October , there were no universally accepted rules for playing football.

In each public school the game was formalised according to local conditions; but when the schoolboys reached university, chaos ensued when the players used different rules, so members of the University of Cambridge devised and published a set of Cambridge Rules in which was widely adopted.

Eleven London football clubs and schools representatives met on 26 October to agree on common rules. Hartshorne, but declined the offer to join.

Civil Service FC, who now plays in the Southern Amateur League , is the only one of the original eleven football clubs still in existence and playing Association Football.

He was a founding member of the Football Association in In , as captain of Barnes, he wrote to Bell's Life newspaper proposing a governing body for the sport that led to the first meeting at The Freemasons' Tavern that created the FA.

As a player, he played in the first-ever match in The first version of the rules for the modern game was drawn up over a series of six meetings held in The Freemasons' Tavern from October till December.

Campbell , the first FA treasurer and the Blackheath representative, withdrew his club from the FA over the removal of two draft rules at the previous meeting, the first which allowed for the running with the ball in hand and the second, obstructing such a run by hacking kicking an opponent in the shins , tripping and holding.

Other English rugby clubs followed this lead and did not join the FA but instead in formed the Rugby Football Union. An inaugural game using the new FA rules was initially scheduled for Battersea Park on 2 January , but enthusiastic members of the FA could not wait for the new year: the first game under F.

The Richmond side were obviously unimpressed by the new rules in practice because they subsequently helped form the Rugby Football Union in The Battersea Park game was the first exhibition game using FA rules, and was played there on Saturday 9 January Pember and the Secretary E.

Morley and included many well-known footballers of the day. Another notable match was London v Sheffield , in which a representative team from the FA played Sheffield FC under Association rules in March ; Charles Alcock described this game as "first [match] of any importance under the auspices of the Football Association".

He masterminded the creation of the Football Association Cup [15] —the longest-running association football competition in the world—in Fifteen participating clubs subscribed to purchase a trophy.

After many years of wrangling between the London Association and the Sheffield Football Association , the FA Cup brought the acceptance that one undisputed set of laws was required.

The two associations had played 16 inter-association matches under differing rules; the Sheffield Rules, the London Rules and Mixed Rules.

In April , those laws were set with a number of Sheffield Rules being incorporated. The FA Cup was initially contested by mostly southern, amateur teams but more professionally organised northern clubs began to dominate the competition during the early s; "The turning point, north replacing south, working class defeating upper and professionals impinging upon the amateurs' territory, came in Blackburn Olympic reached the final in March and defeated Old Etonians.

In , the Football Association took control of the newly created Premier League which consisted of 22 clubs who had broken away from the First Division of the Football League.

The Premier League reduced to 20 clubs in and is one of the richest football leagues in the world. The Football Association celebrated their th year by changing their logo.

The new logo has retained the current logo's three lions but it would be in golden colour and also have "The FA" written above and also have " years " written below.

It also has some writings of the laws of the game penned at the first meeting held at The Freemasons' Tavern. By women's football had become increasingly popular through the charitable games played by women's teams during and after the First World War.

In a move that was widely seen as caused by jealousy of the crowds' interest in women's games which frequently exceeded that of the top men's teams, in the Football Association banned all women's teams from playing on grounds affiliated to the FA because they thought football damaged women's bodies.

For several decades this decision meant that women's football virtually ceased to exist. It only reversed from when, after the increased interest in football caused by England's World Cup triumph, the Women's Football Association was founded, [23] although it would take a further two years - and an order from UEFA - to force the men's Football Association to remove its restrictions on the playing rights of women's teams.

In mid-November , allegations of widespread historical sexual abuse at football clubs dating back to the s began to emerge.

On 21 November, the Football Association said it would set up a helpline; [26] this was established with the NSPCC and opened on 24 November, [27] reportedly receiving over 50 calls within the first two hours, [28] over by 27 November, [29] and "more than three times as many referrals as in the first three days of the Jimmy Savile scandal " by 1 December [30] with individuals alleging abuse.

On 27 November, the FA announced it was to set up an internal review, led by independent counsel Kate Gallafent QC, into what Crewe and Manchester City knew about convicted child sex offender Barry Bennell and allegations of child sexual abuse in football, and investigate what information it was aware of at the time of the alleged offences.

On 6 December , the FA announced that, due to "the increased scope of the review since it was announced" [39] and Gallafent's other professional commitments, the review would be conducted by Clive Sheldon QC.

Sheldon expected to start writing his final report in August In July , it was reported that the FA's independent inquiry had found no evidence of an institutional cover-up or of a paedophile ring operating within football.

Sheldon's report, likely to be highly critical of several clubs, was initially expected to be delivered to the FA in September , [43] but its publication was delayed, potentially by up to a year, pending the retrial of Bob Higgins and possible further charges against Barry Bennell.

Also in December , five former FA executives - David Bernstein , David Davies , Greg Dyke , Alex Horne and David Triesman - called on Parliament's Culture, Media and Sport Committee to propose legislation to reform the FA, saying it was outdated, held back by "elderly white men", and unable to counter the power of the Premier League or "to reform and modernise in a fast-changing world".

In April , it was announced that some reforms, including reducing the size of the FA's board and increasing the number of women, would be submitted for approval to the FA's annual general meeting on 18 May.

However, the proposed changes were criticised by some for not going far enough, particularly to improve minority representation.

However, pressure for FA reform continued fuelled by allegations of racism and bullying in relation to the Mark Sampson and Eniola Aluko cases, and the historical sexual abuse scandal.

A loophole was closed in May by FIFA which allowed players born in the Channel Islands to choose which home nation within the United Kingdom they will represent at international level.

Although the British Overseas Territories are too small to support professional teams, [ citation needed ] they have produced players such as Clyde Best who have gone on to play professionally in the Football Association, and referees such as Carlyle Crockwell , who have refereed FIFA matches.

The British Olympic Association had fought against 'broken time' — monetary compensation for athletes' earnings when competing in the Olympic games.

At the Olympic Congress in Prague, the British had made an amendment that concluded governing federations should define amateur status for their sports but only in accordance with the definition of amateurism accepted by the Olympic Congress.

At the Olympic Congress in Berlin, Belgian delegates proposed that for each sport the definition of amateur status be left to its international federation.

The BOA argued for a common definition of amateurism and argued that 'broken time' payments were against the Olympic ideal. One of the first actions of the Football Association was to request the expulsion of the German and Japanese national football associations for their countries' role in World War II.

They were re-acquainted with FIFA in following a second request from Switzerland who had had a previous request rejected in Broadcasting income remains the FA's largest revenue stream with both domestic and international broadcasting rights for England fixtures and the FA Cup tied up until at least In July the FA announced plans to carry out a significant organisational restructure, in order to deliver considerable cost savings to invest in elite England teams, facilities and grassroots coaching.

The FA's income does not include the turnover of English football clubs, which are independent businesses.

As well as running its own operations the FA chooses five charities each year to which it gives financial support.

The Chairman of the FA has overall responsibility for policy. Traditionally this person rose through the ranks of the FA's committee structure e.

In politician David Triesman was appointed as the FA's first "independent chairman", the first from outside the football hierarchy. The day-to-day head of the FA was known as the Secretary until , when the job title was changed to Chief Executive.
